ICME13 | Hamburg 24-31 July
13th International Congress on Mathematics Education 

ICME is sort of the Olympics of mathematics education where researchers in the field and many teachers too meet to discuss the state-of-the-art. This year Hamburg in Germany is the host. 

My contribution this ICME will be an invited paper for Topic Study Group 4 Activities for, and Research on, Mathematically Gifted Students. 

The other six invited papers are from Australia, Israel, South Africa and two from the US. This TSG is organised by Florence Singer (Romania) and Linda Sheffield (USA), assisted by colleagues from Canada, Germany and Japan.

I ran a one-day workshop on reporting research in mathematics education for graduate students of Faculty of Education in Chiangmai University. It was attended by about thirty graduate students from two cohorts.

Fundamentals of Teaching Primary Mathematics

16th January | Surabaya, Indonesia
A one-day professional development for teachers in a school in Surabaya that uses New Syllabus Primary Mathematics. Jointly organised by Shinglee Publishers Singapore and Pelangi Indonesia. This is standard one-day course where I focus on theoretical underpinnings of good mathematics programmes.

It was titled Nurturing and Developing 21st Century Problem-Solving Skills and was held at a teacher education college - Unuversitas Katolika Widya Mandara and was attended by more than 120 teachers from 57 schools.

A half-day workshop for Hwa Chong Institution on problem-solving approach in secondary mathematics for the entire mathematics department comprising slightly more than a dozen teachers.

Blue Springs School District is having their one-day follow up session - this is part of a funded project with Greg Tang.

9.10 November 
North Wilkesboro Elementary School is having me in their school for two days. This is my second visit. On the first day, representatives from thirteen elementary schools in the district Wilkes County Schools will attend.

11 November 
Math in Focus Institute in California. Andy Clark and I are presenting at this institute.

12.13 November
I will run a two-day session for SDE at an elementary school in Hawaii.

17 November Bangkok
Learning Tree and Shinglee Publishers present a primary school workshop in the Thai capital.

The week after I will be at WALS in Khon Kaen. Other than various duties at WALS including one at Expert Seminar, I will run workshop for Thai primary and secondary teachers.

28 November
National Bookstore and Alkem are presenting an event. I will deliver a session at the event.

30 November to 4 December
I will spend a week at Taipei American School.

I will spend three days at The Latin School Chicago.

10 December

I have been doing this with this collection of schools in Jakarta, Semarang, Bandung and Malang. It is an Indonesian school that adopts Singapore's curriculum. Schedule for Yeap Ban Har | August 2015 Aug Brunei
Advanced Institute for teachers in Brunei. This is part of MCI's work with MOE Brunei. I will travel to Brunei with three other lecturers from MCI.

This week they spend two days on Course 1 - Teaching through Problem Solving and Course 2 - Formative Assessment and Practice.The teachers retuned the week after for two more day courses on other topics. Each teacher will complete four days of professional development with MCI this month.

This course is for selected teachers in Brunei.

MCI is organizing three summer institutes with various university this year. I am teaching at Worcester State University. I have done this one several times now.

18 Aug Kuala Lumpur
I will be in Kuala Lumpur for a day to train a group of secondary teachers who will be trainers of other teachers as the country rolls out its new curriculum. I have been asked to do sessions on critical thinking, problem solving and higher order thinking. Ministry of Education Malaysia is organizing this day-long training. They had wanted a four-day workshop but the late request does not allow for that.

A course on assessment and differentiated instruction in elementary mathematics teaching will be held at Boston. I have done this course several times in Danbury CT.

In July, I am teaching a course in London. Check with for details for a three-day course 1.2.3 July 2015. This course is sold out.
I am also teaching on two (8.9 Jul) of the four days at SDE's National Conference on Singapore Math Strategies in Las Vegas NV. The two days, taken in total examines teaching of different lesson types from basic concept lesson to drill-and-practice lessons to application lessons using anchors tasks. We also did some advanced bar models plus assessment and a half-day course on fractions.
On 10 Jul, I present three lectures on Anchor Tasks at a three-day conference by Singapore Math Training in Scottsdale, AZ. See Singapore Math Training Website.

On 20 July, I will deliver a keynote Helping Students Learn Mathematics:  The Why and How of Singapore Math at Great Hearts Academies in Phoenix, AZ.

Title:  Helping Students Learn Mathematics:  The What and  How of Singapore Math 
The Singapore Mathematics approach focuses on developing students who are problem solvers! 
In this  invigorating keynote address, Ban Har Yeap will take Great Heart educators through the WHAT AND HOW of Singapore Math as he shares the strategies and tools for problem solving and questioning techniques designed to help students become mathematical thinkers!!!

Blake School near Minneapolis in MN is hosting grade-level professional development for teachers in the area. The courses are open to the public. We start we a Grade 1 Institute on Monday and work our way to Grade 6 Institute on Saturday. This could well be the only grade-specific Singapore Mathematics institute in the US. I will teach Master Teacher Development Programme in Brunei.
This is organized by Ministry of Education Brunei and run by MCI. This course is for master teachers in the country. My colleague a retired master teacher will share the course with me.

This is a one day seminar specially targeted at public school teachers but private school teachers are welcome too. This project was initiated by myself but the main organizing work is being done by Keys School Manila with Ateneo providing the venue and various organizations have stepped in to provide sponsorship. East Asian Regional Conference on Mathematics Education EARCOME7 is hosted by Cebu City. I am on the Advisory Committee and will play various roles in the conference.

Workshop | Using Textbooks to Plan and Teach a Lesson Effectively?

What lesson structure and classroom practices lead to good learning and high achievement? In this session, participants will learn to study student textbooks to design lessons that are consistent with learning theories. You will have the opportunity to use textbooks used in Singapore to plan lessons across grade levels.

Alkem Professional Development will be holding a one-day course on writing test items based on the new Dep Ed guidelines. I am teaching it.


Designing Mathematics Test
Study test items from international benchmarking test and learn the procedure to design chapter tests and term examinations. The focus of this course is paper-and-pencil written tests. Alternative assessment methods will be discussed although it is not the focus of this course.

18.19.20 May
This three-day course will be held in Ellesmere Port near Liverpool in the UK. This is on the fundamentals of primary mathematics teaching organized by Maths - No Problem! in collaboration with Teaching School (TSA) Deep Learning. 

It has been fully sold out so registration is no longer possible.

I will be teaching the second part of a two-part session organized by Autism Resource Singapore on helping learners with mathematical concepts.

I look forward to meeting Pathlight School's parents for the second time this year. Our agenda for the session in conjunction with our Parent Communication Night (PCN) is word problems.

Schedule for Yeap Ban Har | April 2015

On Apr 1-2, I will be visiting Ridgefield School District in CT. On Mar 31, I will present to the parents at Veterans Park Elementary School  Auditorium 7-8:30 pm. I will meet Grade 3 (9-12 morning) and Grade 4 (1-4 afternoon) teachers on Apr 1. On Apr 2, I will be the keynote speaker at their Annual District Professional Development Day - Are We Future Ready? and runs workshop that afternoon (1-3 pm) for all elementary teachers.

On 6, 7 and 8 I facilitate lesson study with three learning teams at Choa Chu Kang Primary School in Singapore.

I teach a course on early numeracy for kindergarten teachers in Singapore. This course is organized by Early Childhood Development Agency in Singapore and conducted by Marshall Cavendish Institute. This is on 10 April at SMU.

I am teaching a course in London on Apr 13. Two schools that use Singapore textbooks will attend. Aragon Primary School will host the event. On 14-15 April, I teach three classes in Three Bridges Primary School. The lessons are filmed for use in future CPD.

I will also present at a conference organized by Maths No Problem in London on Apr 24. See Maths No Problem's website for registration details. Close to 200 have registered to come .

On Apr 20-23, I am teaching two 2-day course (select Apr 20-21 or Apr 22-23) on Mathematical Problem Solving in Wales. Details are available on The Learning Partnerships website.

On Apr 16-17, I will be at The Latin School of Chicago. I will run a customized course for second grade teachers and have a meeting with other teachers during my time in the school. I will also get to present at a parents' seminar. 

On Apr 29 and in May, I teach Teaching of Numeracy at Autism Resource Centre Singapore. This six-hour course has been an annual offering amongst ARC's array of courses for educators and parents of children and students on the autism spectrum.  
On Apr 29, Mendaki is holding an Open Lesson to launch the next phase of their RoPE Programme. I am privileged to provide consultancy for this project.

Middle School |

Grade 8 Open Lesson based on Math in Focus Course 3 Section 6.3 | Linear and Non-Linear Models
The lesson is used to embody the Singapore philosophy. The open lessons also shows one way of using the textbook  - how to make the anchor task more engaging, real-world, and student-centered. Differentiation for struggling learners will also be modeled.

In the discussion, we will talk about the different ways to use anchor tasks given in textbooks, use, adapt, abandon. This school district emphasizes applied learning so anchor tasks grounded in real-world situations is a priority.

Grade 6 Open Lesson based on Math in Focus Course 2 Section 6.3 | Alternate Interior, Exterior, and Corresponding Angles.

The focus of this open lesson is on the CPA Approach and Differentiated Instruction. The lesson is on sum of interior angles in a polygon.

This is another model of professional development where conversations are based on Open Lesson taught by the instructor.

Mar 4: Bedford Public Schools, NY (The event was modified because it was a snow day)
The sessions will be in the auditorium of Fox Lane High School. 
8-11 am About 55 Grades 3 to 5 teachers will have their session.
12.20-3.20 About the same number of Grades K to 2 teachers will meet.
There is also a special session for Grade K and special support teachers at 3.45 to 5 pm.
Mt Kisco Elementary will be hosting the parents session (Overview of Singapore Mathematics) at 7 pm. 

This is an example of a customized professional development which is based on grade level bands.

Mar 9-10: Greenwich Public Schools, CT

This is a two-day event for K-2 and 4-8 teachers focusing on problem solving and lesson structure on selected topics. It will be held in Greenwich Town Hall.

Mar 11-12: Westport Public Schools, CT

Based on two open lessons, elementary teachers will spend a day with me to discuss lesson structure with a focus on long division (Grade 3) and mixed numbers (Grade 4). This is an example of topic-specific professional development. Each took half a day. Colleytown Elementary hosted the event.

In the evening I met the parents. Long Lots Elementary School hosted the event.

Based on two open lessons, middle school teachers discuss how to differentiate instruction and how to deliver exciting mathematics lessons. The open lessons were consecutive lessons on percentages from a Singapore textbook. One class is using MiF for the first time this year and the other is not using Singapore Math.

On Mar 7, I will run a one-day train-the-trainers institute for MiF trainers from HMH Professional Development. They have engaged Marshall Cavendish Institute to run the training. The entire institute is for three days. This will be in Washington DC and it is a private event for MiF trainers.

On Mar 16, Shinglee Publishers is organizing a seminar on secondary mathematics in Singapore. I am speaking in my capacity as the consultant for the textbook series used in many Singapore secondary schools. Look out for the invite. The focus is on lesson structure and mathematical modeling in indices, trigonometry and matrices.

On Mar 22, I have been invited to have a dialogue with a group of Japanese mathematics educators. The meeting will be held in Osaka Kyoiku University, the major education university in Osaka, with 5000 education students.

Internationalization of Singapore Mathematics Education: Implications on Sharing Japanese Research and Practice

On Mar 24, I am meeting a visiting group of teachers from the UK. Punggol View Primary School hosted the event. The next day, they visited Gongshan Primary School and CHIJ Toa Payoh (Primary). As part of Building Bridges programme, NIE, UK schools and Singapore schools had the opportunity to visit each other to have professional conversation about mathematics teaching.

On Mar 25, Dunman High School in Singapore is holding a seminar on Introduction to Lesson Study. The school has been doing lesson study. This course will help the new teachers understand the process of lesson study and also allows those who have been doing it to review their efforts.
On March 26, Marshall Cavendish Education is having an exclusive The Pedagogy Behind Excellent Teaching and Learning at Civil Service College Singapore for Heads of Department and Subject Heads. Invitation has been sent to schools so please register early. It is scheduled for 2pm to 4.30pm.
